Light sussex Hen 12mths old with sore eye: Help needed

This is just a quick post to ask if anyone can help with suggestions for my bird. Other eye is fine. I have given saline solution but eye is now worsening, weeping 'clear tears' and side of head swollen so no doubt infection.

Thanks to any BYP's for checking this pic as I couldnt upload to the poultry site

What about betadine (a form of iodine). The vets here use it for every infection - but they don't treat chickens here.

I do have Betadine here which is a antiseptic more than anything and excellent for infections such as sores and ones that are topical. The infection though is behind the eye/sinus so I reckon that is full of pus. Thanks for the suggestion: wont hurt too try.

A poultry person has just said they think vet will need to drain and not much I can really do myself, that I havent already done.

Hows life in France going: well I hope :)

Hi. I had a hen with a very similair infection. I'd get her straight to a decent vet. I spent 3 months treating my girl, and in the end she had surgery. The surgery would have been successful, except we lost her under anaesthetic. I do know of birds who have made full recoveries, we were just unlucky :(

Hi Michelle,

madchickenlady no 2 here. I had a Brahma girl with same problem, I gave her cat antibiotics and it seemed to clear up but it went on for months and in the end she had to be euthanased. Of course she was my favourite chook.

My vet said the surgery was too risky because I left it so long - so get her to a vet (preferably avain) asap. Good Luck

Michelle, I dont have any suggestions, but just wanted to pass on my thoughts for you as you decide what path you want to take. I do hope everything turns out to be benign and short lived. All the best.

Sadly she had to be euthansed: Her eye had ruptured and she was in bad shape. Last week I lost another chook: an old girl, white leghorn that I rescued from a battery hen farm so she has had a good life here with me. Found her passed away in the morning. Today, I lost a baby chick which hatched six days ago..did all I could but it was not strong enough. My husband could not believe I shed tears aover a tiny chick. Buried it 'Pixie" near a baby alpaca I lost 2years ago : That was April whow as 3months old. Her pic is on my Rainbow Bridge Family slideshow.
Thanks for your thoughts and /or advice.
